I’ve been in the maritime industry for four years, and I currently serve as a Third Officer. My work involves maintaining a safe navigational watch, inspecting safety and life-saving equipment, assisting with passage planning and cargo operations, and ensuring the overall safety and security of the vessel in line with company procedures and international regulations.

What I enjoy most about my profession is the beauty hidden within its challenges. Life at sea teaches me to adapt every single day, shaping my character and pushing me beyond my comfort zone. The horizon becomes my office view, a reminder of both freedom and responsibility. I also love meeting people from different cultures and languages—each interaction adds a new colour to my journey. And with all this, the financial stability that comes with the job allows me to focus on learning, growing, and embracing this life fully.

One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is working in environments where the presence of a female officer still isn’t fully normalised. Sometimes this creates difficult situations, socially and professionally. But these moments have strengthened my resilience, clarity, and confidence, helping me better navigate my career and stand firm in who I am.

If I could advocate for one change, it would be to create a culture where female seafarers are seen as completely normal—not exceptions. This means more awareness, gender-sensitivity training, and stronger support systems so women can focus on their work and growth without constantly proving they belong.

My advice to women starting out is simple: trust your capability. The sea will challenge you, but it will also shape you in powerful ways. Stay confident, be adaptable, set boundaries, and keep learning. Speak up when needed, seek mentors, and remember—you deserve to be here just as much as anyone else. Your resilience and professionalism will take you farther than you imagine.

Lakshmipriya, Third Officer – India

My name is Lakshmipriya TS, and I’m from Kochi, Kerala, India.
